Hunterian Museum: The Antonine Wall

Rome's Final Frontier is a new exhibit in the Hunterian Museum, and covers the brief history of the Antonine Wall in Scotland. Not only distance slabs, but smaller objects are in the exhibit, all of them fascinating.
A Roman ring! A little fancier than mine!

Loom weight and spindle-whorls!!!

Old gaming pieces, board and cup! Somehow it reminded me of Parcheesi.

One of the distance slabs

A spout

another spout!

Look at this shoe! Isn't it great?

red clay tile with a DOG PRINT in it! Isn't this fascinating?

Roman coins - with depictions of Celts. These are fabulous! One can definitely tell that they are the Roman idea of the Celtic "barbarian". The man on the left has crazy hair & a beard (and DOES he have a torc around his neck? I can't quite tell). The woman has a wee carnyx behind her head. A carnyx was a kind of trumpet used by the celts in war - they were large and loud and usually had a fierce animal head. These looks and symbols are constantly used by the Romans to depict the Celt.

a wee map showing the line of the Antonine Wall.

A drain cover! Isn't it lovely?

  1. Love that shoe!! And the drain cover--I really enjoy seeing utilitarian things that are also beautiful.
