Laura's House

This is the house I stayed in. It was built sometime around the 1840's. Her family had lived in the more lush area of the island before that, but had been cleared - not off the island, as so often happened - but just down to the rocky bit. This happened a lot in Ìle. It is interesting - and sad - to hear these stories of the clearances, and to realise how long they went on.

The bedroom where I slept. Like Heather's house in NY, the upstairs here just consisted of a bedroom to the left of the staircase, and a bedroom to the right.

The stone byre at the back of their house.

Laura at the back of her house. The small road running in front of the house was all torn up and being repaved, so I never saw it. We came and went by the back door.
